About ClayVital
A beginner hand-building course focused on small clay forms, steady pressure, cleaner edges, and practical material awareness.
Clay practice starts with how the material feels.
ClayVital is built around the early moments that shape the rest of the piece: preparing a small clay body, pressing without collapsing the form, checking moisture, and noticing when a rim, base, or seam needs attention.
The course does not treat finished pieces as the only measure of progress. Repeated pinch forms, short coils, trimmed slabs, and small texture tests help learners understand what their hands are doing before decoration or detail takes over.
Four practice principles for working with clay.
Pressure Before Shape
Learners practice pressing, pinching, and turning the clay without thinning one wall or flattening the base.
Moisture Before Water
Instead of adding water too quickly, practice focuses on reading softness, dryness, slip, and surface drag.
Joins Before Detail
Scoring, slip, and gentle pressure are checked before texture, trimming, or extra clay parts are added.
Checks Before Fixes
Rims, seams, bases, and wall thickness are corrected one area at a time instead of overworking the whole form.
What the practice keeps returning to.
Small repeatable forms
Even walls and rims
Cleaner seams and joins
